This the first of six Lensman episodes written by Haruya Yamazaki, whose impressive resume includes the scripts for Hayao Miyazaki’s Lupin III movie Cagliostro Castle, half of the episodes of Space Pirate Captain Harlock and Cobra, and various episodes of such classics as Ashita no Joe, Ganso Tensai Bakabon, Urashiman, and Zero Tester.
Episodes 11-12 are a two-parter involving Admiral Haynes’ granddaughter, and a gang of space thugs called the Skull Killers. Yamazaki’s next story, a four-parter running from episodes 13-16, is a lot weirder as you’ll see eventually.

Just out of curiosity, how many episodes do you have left?

I have all 25 episodes, thanks to the incredibly helpful efforts of several old school videotape collector friends. But they do vary in quality a bit. Episode 15 is watchable enough to subtitle and release, but not as good as I’d like.
My copies of the last three episodes are so multi-gen that I doubt if we could release them. There was a major tracking problem with the tape (possibly creased edge syndrome) and the playback deck had that “helpful” feature that replaces particularly garbled signals with a blue screen. The audio is good enough that we could actually subtitle them, but I dunno if the majority of viewers would appreciate the effort.
So basically the game plan is that we’ll keep subtitling and releasing the decent quality episodes with /m/subs, while in the meantime I will continue searching for better copies of 15 and 23-25. There are still lots of collector friends I can e-mail (in some cases snail mail and hope they live at the same address as when we used to trade 30 years ago!), and I can post requests on forums where the old school fandom crowd hangs out.

25 huh? I never knew how many episodes the Galactic Patrol actually had. I wish you luck in finding better sources, but I’ll be more than happy to watch whatever you release.
I’ve mentioned it before but it bears saying again, I knew Lensman: Galactic Patrol existed but had never seen one episode until you decided to sub them. Thank you.

The Blue Screen can be removed on some decks. My SVHS decks allow me to do this (Blue Background Y/N). I can\t remember what was the problem with the last episodes I had. I can always send the tapes to you unless they have to be baked. I never figured out how to do that. My attempts from last year were all failures. I have lots of tips for baking tapes to restore them but I guess I can’t follow directions. So it goes…

Hey, Doug, The problem with those multi-gen VHS copies of Lensman 23-25 is that I don’t have access to those tapes, I only have a DVD-R of the episodes that a friend got in a trade. If I had those old tapes I could copy them on a VHS deck that doesn’t have that “helpful” blue screen feature, but the quality would still be pretty poor.
If I’m remembering correctly, I think the problem with your Betamax recordings of 23-25 is that your friend in Nagasaki’s Beta deck was on its last legs when they were recorded. The last few episodes get progressively worse and then right after Lensman finished he bought a new machine with Beta-hifi capability. So even if I knew how to “bake” videotapes for restoration, it’s unlikely that would help (since it’s not a tape deterioration issue, rather a problem with the machine they were recorded on.)
That said, I’m very grateful for all of the Lensman episodes that you were able to provide me with better copies of, not to mention all the other cool rare tapes. I’m thinking maybe my best bet on the last three episodes is to post a note on Old School Otaku Lounge or other such forums where fellow collectors from the tape trading days hang out.

Nanto….PLEASE….more Azteckaiser…..Battle Hawk…..and….Akumaizer 3! Been waiting and waiting. Those shows are too great to not see more of. Counting on you!

More Azteckaiser and Battle Hawk are in the works, slowly but surely. I want to watch them just as much myself.
Obviously I love Akumaizer 3, but isn’t that being subtitled by KITSubs, the same group that’s doing Kamen Rider ’71, Stronger and Skyrider?

I think they are doing Akumaizer 3, but their “progress” has slowed to less than a crawl. I think it’s been over a year since they’ve released anything. At that pace I will be long dead before they even finish Kamen Rider 1, let alone Akumaizer 3.

Hi Nanto. KITsubs hasn’t released an Akumaizer 3 episode going on 4 years now, episode 10 being the last one. How long do these things get to sit before someone finally decides to take over? I hope you consider picking it up starting with episode 11!
I sure hope we get to see some more Azteckaiser and Battle Hawk from you. As I said before, those shows are way too good to not be able to finish out. You’ve worked very hard to take them this far, please give us MORE.

Likewise, I never realized that the Lensman TV series reached about a season’s length. I saw the (VHS) commercial releases of the earlier episodes floating around for exorbitant prices but never thought I’d actually get a chance to watch them.
Thanks so much for pushing ahead with this lost treasure, Nanto. I’d wager you’re spending just as much (or more) time hunting down the remaining episodes as actually doing the subtitling! Hard work, that!

Sorry, but I just found a small quality control issue concerning the name of episode 11 – it is announced differently in the end of episode 10 from when episode 11 was published.

It was announced as “Lost Pilots?! Soll!” and then when published it was “Soll, the Escaping Pilot?!”.

That’s wrong in the batch, but I’m pretty sure I fixed it later, and the corrected version of episode 10 is the one that’s on Mega.
I should have an answer for your other question soon…I always forget how the last five episode work in terms of story arc, so I’ll need to take a look at them to figure it out.
